Title:
Vocabulary Memorization
Subject:
Modern Language or any other with specific vocabulary requirements
Grade:
Any
Time Frame:
5-15 minutes at a time
Summary:
Students use Flashcards Deluxe (or similar app) to download vocabulary flashcards and review them for 5-15 minutes at a time.
Tasks:
1) Teacher or student creates vocabulary list using the app or a website that works with the app such as Quizlet or Flashcard Exchange.

2) Students download flashcards to iPad or iPod touch.

3) Students use the app to review their vocabulary for 5-15 minutes. (Note - it is possible to access Quizlet.com to review the vocabulary as well and it has a few affordances the app does not have. Though, there are a few affordances within the app itself that Quizlet does not have.)
Objectives:
  • Common Core State Standards
    • The Language standards include the essential “rules” of standard written and spoken English, but they also approach language as a matter of craft and informed choice among alternatives. The vocabulary standards focus on understanding words and phrases, their relationships, and their nuances and on acquiring new vocabulary, particularly general academic and domain-specific words and phrases. source: http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/english-language-arts-standards
    • Mathematically proficient students understand and use stated assumptions, definitions, and previously established results in constructing arguments. Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others. They try to use clear definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. source: http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics
  • GLCEs
  • "21st Century Learning"
    • If students learn to create their own flashcards, and the class discusses when this is a worthwhile endeavor, they are able to use a tool for rote memorization when that is called for in their learning process
